Abbott J. Keller, CFA, Chief Investment Officer

As a strategist and portfolio manager, Abbott’s expertise spans a wide array of industry sectors, with particular focus on transportation, media, utilities and forest products. His experience in these areas provides him considerable insight into the dynamics of regulated industries. Prior to cofounding Kestrel, Abbott held positions as a strategist and a member of the Investment Decision Group at Concord Capital Management for twelve years.  Abbott was also a Senior Investment Strategist for seven years at American National Bank of Chicago.

Abbott earned his B.S. in Finance from the University of Oregon, where he was awarded the 1972 Wall Street Journal Finance Award. He received an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973, graduating in the top ten percent of his class. Abbott serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Oregon Foundation.


David J. Steirman, President

Prior to cofounding Kestrel in 1993, David spent 12 years at Concord Capital Management where his responsibilities included theme development, investment research, and management of finance, operations, systems and trading. Prior to Concord, David was Director of Investment Systems at American National Bank of Chicago. He was also associated with the Harris Bank’s Management Sciences area in Chicago.

David graduated magna cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1976 and received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1979. David serves on the Board of Directors of several non-profit organizations.


Lee Kaplan, CFA, CPA, Vice President, Equity Research

Lee joined Kestrel in 2004. An industry generalist, he focuses his research on equity valuation of publicly traded companies involved in strategic shifts, including the dismantling of conglomerates. His professional experience includes financial and tax consulting, and valuation of private and public businesses. Prior to Kestrel, Lee was an equity analyst with Spin-Off Advisors L.L.C. in Chicago. Lee also had a six year public accounting career in Los Angeles with Price Waterhouse and Altschuler, Melvoin & Glasser.

Lee earned a B.S. in Accounting (cum laude) in 1993 and Master of Business Taxation in 1995 from the University of Southern California. He also earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 2003. Lee holds the CFA designation and is a Certified Public Accountant (accredited in Business Valuation by the AICPA).


Thomas E. Stickley, CCO and Client Services Manager

Tom joined Kestrel in 2011. Tom’s financial services career began in 2000 on the NASDAQ trading desk at Deutsche Bank Securities in New York. He then joined the Securities & Exchange Commission’s Office of Compliance Inspections & Examinations where he conducted examinations on registrants and inquiries into a broad array of regulatory issues at SRO’s, broker-dealers and investment advisors. Tom relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in early 2008 and worked in sell-side equity research with Signal Hill Capital Group and KeyBanc Capital Markets.

He is a former U.S. Coast Guard Officer and a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy where he earned a B.S. in Management and Economics. After leaving the military, Tom attended NYU’s Stern School of Business, earning an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance.


Gregg S. Uyekubo, CFA,  Vice President, Trading

Prior to joining Kestrel in 1998, Gregg was an Equity Analyst at Crescent Capital Management Company.

He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Davis in 1987 and earned his M.B.A. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1996. Gregg was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2001.
